Tips for Road Tripping with Your Pets

Are you planning a road trip with your furry friend? If so, there are a lot of things to do and think about before you and your pet can head out on the open road. No matter how far your road trip will take you or how long you will be away from home, both you and your pet need to be comfortable because travel can be pretty stressful.  We have created this guide, sharing some of our best tips and tricks, to embarking on the best pet-friendly road trip. Read on to check them out before your summer adventures begin!

Prepare Your Pet
Traveling can be very stressful for pets and you want them to be as comfortable as possible so its a great experience for you both. You can prepare them for your long road trip by going on short drives in the beginning and then slowly lengthening the amount of time they are spending in the vehicle. Please remember to never leave your pet alone in the car no matter the temperature outside!

Prepare Your Vehicle
In addition to making sure your vehicle is running in tip-top shape, you need to ensure that your vehicle is ready for your pet. One of the most important things to have is a way to secure your pet whether it be a harness that buckles into the vehicle, a crate or carrier. This will prevent your pet from jumping into your lap to hang out with you or look out the window while you are trying to drive. A carrier or harness will also keep your pet safe in the event of an accident. If you are able to, disable the airbag for the seat your pet will be occupying.

Talk to Your Vet
Before you head out, give your vet a call to make sure that your furry friend is up to date with their vaccinations and discuss any other health concerns you may have about where you are traveling to. You can also ask the vet about remedies if your pet gets car sick or restlessness. If your pet is not micro-chipped, this is a good time to talk to your vet about it so in the event that you do get separated and they end up at a shelter, vet's office, human society, or animal hospital they can be scanned and reunited with you!

Travel Gear
Just like human kids, your fury children need a lot of stuff! Pack enough food (food and water bowls too!) and treats for the length of your trip and maybe some extras in case the schedule gets thrown off and you won't make it home as planned. This also goes for medications. If you are spending the night in an unfamiliar place, their bed and a few toys will help them feel more comfortable. A pet first aid kit is also a great thing to have on hand in case something happens to them. This is also a great reminder to bring a copy of their medical records and proof of vaccinations along with you in the event that you need to make a stop at the vet's office.
